This is a ten inch sculpture of a tetradrachm of Catana, Sicily. The original Greek silver coin was struck circa 405 B.C. and is about the size of a U.S. quarter. Two obverse (heads) dies of this type were engraved by the celator Herakleidas, which he signed. This is the one I prefer. The reverse of the actual coin depicts a charioteer driving a fast quadriga (four horse chariot) to the left. Nike (Victory) is flying above, placing a wreath on the charioteer’s head.
Olympian Apollo is a god of many things including prophecy, the arts, especially music, and he was the god of healing. The Hippocratic Oath starts, "I swear by Apollo....". I have wanted to sculpt an enlargement of this coin for thirty years, and after hundreds of hours of work in clay, and with the help of four enlarged coin photos, here it is. Apollo is cast in a very strong and fine cement called Hydrocal and hand finished with metallic wax. It can be either hung on the wall or stood on a display stand. After two thousand five hundred years, best wishes from Herakleidas and me, Carroll Gibson.

P.S. A partial quote from the book “ Masterpieces of Greek Coinage” by Charles Seltman on the actual coin states, “The face and eyes are those of a god who can deal hardly with men that do evil, for here is terrible power with transcendent calm…”.
