PTOLEMAIC KINGDOM. Ptolemy I. under Magas, ca. 300-298 BC. Gold stater (7.11 gm). Diademed head of Ptolemy I right, aegis tied around neck / [ΠΤ]ΟΛΕΜΑ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΕ, deified Alexander standing left in elephant quadriga, holding thunderbolt, ΙΠΠΟΚΡ monogram in exergue. Naville 243 (same dies). Svoronos 102. Absolutely mint state with no striking weakness, die rust or centering problems. Ex Giessener Munzhandlung 60, 1992, lot 303. Gold staters of this type were the first coins issued in Egypt with the portrait of Ptolemy I. Similar staters were issued on a more limited basis in Cyrene by Ptolemy's stepson, Magas, who had recovered the restive province of Cyrenaica about 300 BC.
