Severus Alexander, Amasia, Pontus

Severus Alexander, Amasia, Pontus

Altar of Zeus Stratios surmounted by flaming offering table upon which the bovine sacrifice lays prostrate, tree on left. The Altar of Zeus Stratios in Amasia was one of the most famous in the region and its flames could be seen by sailors following the coastline of the Black Sea. This rare variety shows the precise moment when the offering is made to Zeus. (CNG description)

The colonial series offer a variety of types unknown to the imperial series; and featured scenes bring back the ancient times to us. This coin is perfectly preserved, and shows an event I hadn't seen ever before. FA-BU-LOUS!
