Antigonos Doson tetradrachm (Obv)

Kingdom of Macedon, Antigonos Doson (227-221 B.C.), Silver Tetradrachm. Mint of Pella. Head of Poseidon facing right, wearing a wreath of seaweed 17.13g., 12h (Panagopoulou pl. 33, 158; SNG Alpha Bank 1046-7; SNG Ashmolean 3264).
A beautiful example, well-struck and centred on a very broad flan, light iridescent cabinet toning, extremely fine.

While these silver Tetradrachms of Antigonos Doson are not particularly rare, it is surprisingly difficult to find an example as well-struck as this. Both obverse and reverse are in high relief for this issue and, in combination with attractive toning, provide significant eye-appeal.

Provenance:
Ex NAC 8, 3 April 1995, lot 229
Ex Leu 86, 5 May 2003, lot 367

Thanks, Mark. To me, this type is a great example of Ancient Greece, with both Poseidon and Apollo presented in nice style.
