Bronze provincial as, minted at Hypaepa, in Asia Minor (AD 66-68). Statilia Messalina (third wife of Nero) faces her husband on the obverse side; the reverse features a facing cult statue of the goddess Artemis. Reference: RPC (I) No. 2245 (variation; the reverse legend encircles the statue, rather than being placed in straight, vertical lines on either side of it). Unlike other women in Nero's life, Statilia managed to avoid becoming one of his victims, and following his demise, was even offered a proposal of marriage from the emperor Otho (which she declined).
