The empire was in relative peace for approximately 44 years prior to the reign of Marcus Aurelius

Trouble began shortly after Marcus Aurelius became Emperor, and he spent 16 of the next 20 years of his reign fighting battles on both the northern and eastern frontiers

This coin commemorates his victory in battles against Germanic tribes during the "First German War" (AD 170-176)
