It purports to be a silver 5 fen coin of Yarkand in Sinkiang province struck in the name of
Kuang-hsu (Guang Xu) 1875-1908. The character Kuang (Guang) doesn't seem to be complete as two top strokes appear to be missing, although I think I see slight traces of them, but then they would be oddly placed, if so. Krause-Mishler doesn't show this variety. This may be just a variant. I'm not expert enough to say if it is a genuine example. Incidently, your photos are upsidedown, but easy to do with an unfamiliar script.

Thanks so much for the information. Its obviously not an ancient coin. Can you recommend a site for more modern coins. My area of interest is all Indian coinage but I have odd pieces such as this Uighur coin and some Persian ones I need help in identifiying.

I may be able to help with the Persian coins, although I no longer have most of the pertinent reference books. I can read many of the Persian proper names. You may contact me directly at: alandeshazo@yahoo.com.
