I have often wondered if these coins actually depict how grapes were cultivated at the time. As an avid gardener, I have tried 'training' various types of flowering bushes on trellises and these look as if they have been, as the horticulturalists say 'esplanaded'. The commercial growers I've seen in California stake their vines in similar fashion. Does anyone know for certain how the Greeks cultivated their vines?

Thanks for the comment. I know nothing about viticulture. Perhaps others can comment. This is a detail from the reverse of my Maroneia Stater. You might find the whole reverse interesting though I doubt it will shed any light on your question. You can find it in my Greek silver gallery. -h
