Italy. Republic of Venice. Giovanni Mocenigo. 1478-1485. AR marcello (). IO. MOCENIGO S. M. VENETI, Doge kneeling before St. Mark; P-M in fields; DVX by pendant, A-B across field / GLORIA. TIBI. SOLI, Christ enthroned facing; IC-XC across field. Paolucci p. 49, 3; Gamberini 216. Nicely toned VF. Scarce denomination.
The marcello was named after the doge Nicolo Marcello who introduced the denomination about 1473/4 or so. While the Venetian grosso weighs about 2 g, the marcello weighs about 3.2 g, giving it an exchange ratio of about 0.75 to the grosso. The designs of the new denomination were slightly altered, providing the marcello with a very handsome appearance as compared to the grosso. |
