AR Tetartemorion Obv: Archaic Athens-style Athena in crested helm; facing right. Rev: Eagle in profile, facing right; Lycian "p" in right field; dotted border w/in square incuse. Attribution: BMC Lycia -; Vismara I & II -; Morkholm & Zahle -; Babelon Traite' -; SNG von Aulock - Provenance: ex. Barry P. Murphy, 5.7.07 Weight: 0.26 gm. Maximal Diameter: 6.51 mm. Axis: 12 Notes: Possibly unique; not listed in any of the standard or specialized references for Lycian coinage. If this coin, along with another added to my collection proves to be a tetartemorion, it would be one of two smallest known fractionals from the Lycian Dynasts series. The Lycian character "P" in the right field on the reverse could represent a Dynast monogram (i.e., Perikle) or city (i.e., Patara, Pinara). In either event, the derivative use of the Athens-style Athena is consistent with other mid-to-late Dynastic issues of larger denomination. It is very possible that this coin and the other tiny fractional came from the same hoard, in which case the full legend on the other piece might provide a clue as to the full attribution of this coin. Wow! Until I got through half of the desscription, I was completely sure that this is a stater. What a neat piece, and so nice metal & grade for a "tetartemorion." ... Not to mention the photography!
