Unlisted Florianus Obv Legend

I've picked up this little beauty from the recent Fruehwald auction. The obverse legend isn't listed in Estiot's BNF Monnaie de l'Empire romain XII.1 Aurelian a Florian. A similar legend, IMP C M AN FLORIANVS PIVS F AVG is known for the second emission from Serdica for workshops A & B (1 example of each is known).

Obv : IMP C M AN FLORIANVS PIVS AVG, Radiate and cuirassed bust right
Rev: PROVIDEN DEOR
Exergue: Delta

This coin is my 128th unique antoninianus of Florian.

BTW, anyone know of any other diehard collectors of the coins of the Emperor Florian?

Cheers!

John Barnard

That is a beauty

That is a beauty and of a generally under-appreciated ruler. I have the feeling that his control over at least a portion of the empire was longer than generally credited. Certainly his coinage is complex and interesting for such a short lived ruler.

It's a shame that historical information of Florian is so sparse. As Eutropius writes "FLORIANUS, who succeeded Tacitus, was on the throne only two months and twenty days, and did nothing worthy of mention."

The output of coins from Siscia is incredible and 6/10 of my unlisted coins for Florian are from there. I find Ticinum to be another interesting mint as the number of examples for the coins minted there is less than most of the other mints.

Have you been in touch with Sylviane Estiot about the possibility of publishing this and your other unlisted Florians?

I have been encouraged by a fellow collector to have my unlisted Florians published and the first person to come to my mind was Sylviane Estiot.

Curtis - could you send me a PM with a recommendation on what would be the best way to contact her? Thank you.

Hi Tibsi,

That's a beautiful Florian you have. Estiot lists 1 example in the BNF and 2 which were found in La Venera Hoard. I have the radiate and cuirassed version of which there were no known examples listed by Estiot.

I have about 40 of my Florian coins in the member galleries (drjbca) and need to to do quite a bit more photography work.

If you ever decide to sell your coin please let me know!

Cheers!

John
