Probus Ticinum

Seeing the wonderful Probus from Lugdunum shared the other day made me want to dredge up this coin and update my images of it to share. It is a scarcer bust type from Ticinum.

Obv: IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG, Radiate, cuirassed bust left in elaborate cuirass decorated with Medusa medallion & holding Vitoriola (Victory on globe, facing left, holding wreath) in right hand, palm up
Rev: VIRTVS AVG, Soldier standing left, holding Victory and spear and leaning on shield
Minted in Ticinum(QXXT) Emission 2 Officina 4. A.D. 276
Reference: Cohen unlisted. RIC 435 var. (This bust type not listed in RIC or Cohen)
Die match is illustrated in Bastien's Buste Monetaire... pl. 126 number 11

OK, you've inspired me to post my one and only sort of cool Probus! RIC 626, Siscia.

A Probus????

Isn't that almost 300 years too late for you?

I must admit that I laughed out loud at that one Barry as the same thought had crossed my mind but was too distracted by the coin to say it.

Well, yeah. In fact though, I still have a fair number of coins from my "old" imperial portrait gallery, mostly because I never got around to deacquisitioning them. Most are ho-hum, yawn-- a few, like this Probus, I actually like.

I find it funny how everyone always starts out collecting ancients with the imperial portraits series, me being one of them, only to later digress out into fields which are much less "ordered".
