Probus Lugdunum

The following Probus arrived recently in my mailbox. The reverse is a little bit flat, but it has a really nice obverse.

Obv: VIRTVS PROBI AVG Radiate, cuirassed bust right, holding spear and shield, seen from inner side
Rev: FIDES MILITVM Fides left, holding two standards
Bastien 235 (3 ex.)

Kind regards

Josef

I'd say that the reverse die was on its last legs and ready to be replaced when this was struck.

Richard,

You're not really looking at the reverse are you? Who cares, the obverse is spectacular.

Yeah, it does rather speak for itself, doesn't it?

That is one of the most gorgeous Probus coins I've ever seen! Wow.

That is a wonderful coin though it could be improved slightly by moving into my collection! That is a wonderful example of a very scarce bust type. By the way, your image is much more alive than that of the seller, which isn't flattering at all.

The only example I have coming close to that quality is the following:-

Seller? Was that an ebay coin or dealer?

@ Martin
Your coin is wonderful! A perfect and scarce obverse with a lot of details. But I especially like the reverse. It's not easy to find scarcer types of reverses from Lyon from a fresh die. Apparently they exchanged the reverse dies very lately.

@Barry
It's almost impossible to get better Probus on ebay (for a reasonable price). There's a UK dealer taking all of them. So on ebay I am only getting common coins and perhaps one or two a year that I am looking for for a long time and where I am willing to pay a really high price.

Regards

Josef

Josef,

I know about ebay Probus' and the one bidder. I would have been surprised had it been an ebay coin. I'm sure you paid a lot for the coin. It's a 4 figure Probus. If you ever want to part with it, let me know.

That's because I'm stupid. I looked at BPMurphy's profile as "Dec 2003" instead of looking at the date of the actual post!
