Indo Greek? and who issued?
hello,
I believe this coin is an Ind0-Greek coin. These are pretty common and see on ebay and elsewhere. These are from Pushkalavati. I would like to know more information on these coins. Who issued them and probable time period and any references? thanks in advance M |

This is not an Indo-Greek coin, but an independently issued coin before the Indo-Greeks conquered the area. According to Mitchiner, "This period of this coinage coincides fairly closely with the years of local independence that commend early in the post-Ashoka period (c. 220 BC) and ended with the conquest of northern Pakistan by the Indo-Greek kings Antimachos, Agathocles and Pantaleon (c. 169 BC)." Mitchiner believes that the coin you have posted was minted between 185 to 160 B.C.
Mitchiner list this in his Oriental Coins and Their Values, The Ancient & Classical World as numbers 4401 to 4403. He calls these coins AE 1 1/2 Karshapana with a weight of 120 rattis; about 13.2 grams. Last edited by hcole1989 : Mar 31, 2007 at 04:32 PM. Reason: Spelling errors |
