Anyone have any ideas as to why the Spain mints were so active from Augustus through Caligula, but stopped and were never very active again? I'm just curious.

The Cantabrian Wars finished in 19 B.C., but there were still two legions in Spain for about another seventy years. I suspect that as the troops left, there was much less need for coinage as the locals probably relied on payment in kind to a great extent.

Certainly, the removal of legions would have decreased the need for bronzes, but I do not think there is any indication that the local population had to revert to barter. Another contributing factor may be that the supply of imperial bronzes became sufficient for local needs. I get the impression that the bronzes of Claudius, Nero, the Flavians, etc. are found abundantly in Spain.
