Post ACCG Sponsors YN Scholarship

The newly formed Ancient Coin Collectors Guild is proud to announce its sponsorship of a $1,000 scholarship to be awarded to a young numismatist who takes a course on ancient coinage at the 37th annual Summer Seminar of the American Numismatic Association.

The ACCG scholarship will cover not only the tuition costs of the seminar, but will also pay for the young students’ lodging and meals throughout the week, and their round-trip domestic airfare to Colorado Springs, where the seminar has been held ever since its inception. The ACCG plans to make this an annual event.

“We have a long legacy of offering courses on ancient coins at the summer seminar, and we are excited to receive this scholarship from the ACCG. It certainly will help encourage our young people to study the classics,” says Gail Baker, director of education for the ANA. “All numismatists should have a working understanding of ancient coinage to not only understand the origins of our field, but also to expand their understanding of more recent coinages.”

The ANA summer seminar is a premier educational event in numismatics, which last year spanned two weeks and hosted a record 484 participants. The event for which the ACCG scholarship will be awarded is scheduled for June 25-July 1 and July 2-8, 2005, and will be held at the ANA’s headquarters and on the adjacent campus of The Colorado College.

“Having attended the ANA’s courses as a student and an instructor since 1979, I believe this scholarship is money well spent,” says Kerry Wetterstrom, chairman of the ACCG’s education committee and veteran instructor at the ANA summer seminars. “At the seminars collectors are created, and existing collectors are nurtured. The seminar offers a unique educational experience, and the ACCG is proud to support that.”

In recent years, more than fifty students per year have attended the summer seminar on full scholarships raised by individuals, organizations and by the proceeds of charity auctions held by young numismatists attending the seminar. The ANA education department will determine which student will be awarded the ACCG scholarship based upon applicants’ general eligibility for a scholarship, and their specific interest in taking a course on ancient coinage.

At this time the ancient coinage course scheduled to be offered is “Ancient Roman Coinage” taught by Kerry Wetterstrom and David Vagi, though the final schedule of classes has not been formulated, and others may yet be added.

The ACCG is a non-profit, volunteer organization incorporated in the State of Missouri that is open to general membership to individuals and Affiliate Membership to clubs and organizations. Through education, political action and consumer protection, the ACCG is dedicated to protecting peoples’ rights to legally and freely acquire ancient coins for personal or professional use regardless of age or place of origin.
