Obol fraction with head of ram / lion scalp
Here is a coin I purchased over 20 years ago to which I have never been able to find a reference nor have I seen another.
AR Obol fraction (hemiobol?) Obv.: Hd. of ram r. Rev.: Lion's scalp or mask facing Wt.: approx. 0.3g (I don't have a scale accurate to hundredths) Max. dia.: 6mm The ram's head suggests Kebren, but it's certainly not unique to that city. SNG Kayhan lists types with ram's head/roaring lion r., along with the fairly common ram's head/male hd. r. type (SNG Kayhan 988ff, 993ff). The style of the lion to my eye looks like it may belong more to the fringes of the Greek world (Macedonia, SW Asia Minor?) than to Greece proper. Does anyone know this coin? |

Obol fraction
Hi
Possibly Samarian? I have this book somewhere I think but not on me right now. http://www.amazon.com/Samarian-Coina.../dp/9652229652 Or maybe Cypriot. Feels like from that part of the Med. Brgds Alex

Thanks for the pointer - it looks like the ANA library has a copy of that reference that I could borrow.

On reflection check out Cypriot references first - the execution is good and many Samarian/Philistinian coins copy them..
