Is this Bull or what?
I have seen a few of these sell but no one seems to know what it is. I can't find it in any of my reference books. It has been suggested that on one side of the coin is a bull's head facing right and on the other side is a bunch of grapes. What do you think? The tiny little silver coin measures 6.6 X 8.0 mm and is very thin. My gram scale is on the blink.

Ron,
Silver fractions of this type have been found in some excavations in the neighborhood of Abdera and Maroneia in Thrace. Some have letters around the grape bunch: D-I-K-A-I, clearly pointing to Dikaia as the mint. Also found in the same excavations are silver fractions with a facing head of a lion on the obverse and a grape bunch on the reverse, some of which also have the letters for Dikaia. I have one of these in my collection (image attached). Both types are published in Nomismatika Chronika vol. 22 (2003) by Domna Terzopoulou in an article titled 'Small Silver Fractions from Ancient Stryme'. Greg |

Greg,
Thanks for the info: It's much appreciated. I couldn't tell if that was a bull or some mythological creature. Ron |

Definitely looks like a bull in profile to me.
