New Obverse Legend? GAL VAL MAXIMIANVS CAES
Folks,
Is this coin published anywhere? ![]() Galerius as Caesar, AE Follis, c.294, Group I, Class II, Siscia, Officina 2 GAL VAL MAXIMIANVS CAES Laureate head right, divergent laurel ties GENIO POP_VLI ROMANI Genius standing facing, modius on head left, naked but for chlamys over left shoulder, patera in right hand, cornucopiae in left S | B across fields 26mm x 27mm, 9.06g RIC VI, -- (cf. RIC VI, 81b for type) Note: Obverse legend without some reference to Nobilissimus before Caesar is not attested for any issue in RIC VI. The obverse legend does not appear in John Jencek's database (although it will now that I submitted it) http://www.ancient-coins.com/legendform.asp Perhaps it's a blunder? Or perhaps was used only for a very short period of time? Thanks in advance for any help. --Zach Beasley

At first I thought maybe RIC had a typo in the obverse legend, but I did find photos of examples from both officna A and B that have the NOB C legend as listed in RIC.
Looks new to me. Barry Murphy |

That legend formula is common enough for argentei and gold coins -- now I'm wondering if there's any significance to why it never (and now, almost never) appears for the base nummi, given that almost every possible abbreviation for "nobilissimus caesar" occurs somewhere?
I'd say it was a mistake that was caught quickly, perhaps by a celator who had also engraved an argenteus die with that legend. That die looks like it hasn't seen a lot of use. I have a coin where the obv portrait is almost a complete virtual die match for this coin, but with a conventional Diocletian legend. Interesting to compare the two: |
