Carolingian coins
I would like to post observations on Carolingian coins. I would appreciate hearing from group members who are interested. Please either reply publicly on this web site or if
preferred, privately to me at: alandeshazo@yahoo.com |

So far over 50 members showed enough interest to look at my message, but none have replied either on site or privately.
Maybe a teaser will get some to reply: That is, I believe that there is some numismatic evidence that I can present that shows that the Quentovic mint briefly produced dies for 3 other mints. Alan S. |

Alan,
Thanks and I'll reply on-list. I know nothing about Carolingian coins, so I would love to read anything you have on them. It's always great learning about new areas of ancient numismatics! Thanks in advance, --Zach Beasley

I must admit I had never heard of them - I believe this website is the answer to any lack of information. http://home.eckerd.edu/~oberhot/fcarol.htm

The http://home.eckerd.edu/~oberhot/fcarol.htm website is excellent. My observations are meant to supplement it.

Hi
Im interested in all things early medieval, including Carolingian coinage. Saying that, I find Merovingian even more interesting! The links between the Franks/Anglo-Saxons including moneyers is something to research and anything you have, including die manufacture for AS mints I would like to see. Brgds Alex

Alex,
My knowledge of Merovingian coins is very sparse. Although I used to collect English hammered coins and had some lovely Anglo-Saxon pennies, I no longer have them or indulge in research on them. My observations will be confined to Carolingian and possibly early French feudal coins. Alan S. |

Hi
In that case have you seen, and what are your thoughts on, the couple of new Louis the Pious AV 'solidus' up for auction? (Spink and possibly Elsen? Lockdales had one in Jan). Brgds Alex

Alex,
The coins to which you refer are later imitations and not really Carolingian. The Spink writeup is detailed and gives provenances to the specimens known to them. This is better than I could do. I have never even held a gold Carolingian coin in my hand, so my opinion on them wouldn't count for much. Sorry that I can't be of help in this case. Regards, Alan S. |
