The conference will be held in York (UK) on 14th July 2011 and will focus on Roman coinage related to Britain. Essentially, that means coins that refer to Britannia, coins officially minted in Britain and coins unofficially minted in Britain. There will also be some input on how Roman coinage influenced early Anglo-Saxon coinage.

The conference is part of a weeklong “festival of numismatics” – the York Coin Fair is being held that week and the 2011 Leeds International Medieval Congress takes place from July 11-14 and, with its theme of Poor . . . Rich, includes a medieval coinage symposium covering the period from 973 to c.1500. This will be held on Wednesday 13th July.

We are also looking at the possibility of organising other events. Further information will be published on the websites so do sign up for automated online updates.

Any comments or suggestions will be gratefully received.

Best wishes

Lee Toone

P.S. It has been pointed out that “MONETA BRITANNIA” may be grammatically incorrect. Mea culpa! My excuse is that the engraver didn’t have enough room on the die ..........

Astronomical Symbols on Ancient and Medieval Coins by Marshall Faintich; McFarland & Co., 2008, 232 pages, $55.00.

This fascinating and important book deserves more attention. This book was released ahead of the International Year of Astronomy 2009, sponsored by the International Astronomical Union and UNESCO on the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s use of the telescope to examine the stars. Yet, it received few reviews in either astronomical or numismatic publications.

I have a review coming out in the CSNS Centinel. I read about this on the E-Sylum maillist in several announcements.
The publisher's announcement was reprinted first (May 16, 2010)
http://www.coinbooks.org/esylum_v13n20a04.html

Then editor Wayne Homren offered a review (June 27)
http://www.coinbooks.org/club_nbs_es....html#article6

Then, July 18, astronomer and numismatist Kavan Ratnatunga offered a review
http://www.coinbooks.org/esylum_v13n29a05.html

I acquired the book and found that enthusiasm aside, none of those actually provided a technical review, either on numismatic or astronomical grounds. In 1978, I did a directed study in astronomy at New Mexico State University at their Clyde Tombaugh Observatory and in 1980, I completed a direted study in celestial mechanics at Lansing Community College. I have several standard books on mathematical astronomy and once upon a time wrote programs from the maths. But that was a long time ago, and I am not a professional astronomer. However, completing a master's degree this past winter, I took some cognate electives in geoscience and physics and I have enlisted help from a graduate and undergraduate colleagues to review the astronomy in Faintich's book. Those reviews wil follow soon, the first for the MSNS Mich-Matist and the ANA Numismatist.

There is no doubt that anicent and medieval coins have stars, moons, suns, orbs, annulets and other symbols on them. The question is: what do they mean? To validate any claims, it must be known what was in the sky near the time that the coin was struck. The problem is that the Earth wobbles. When a county or a kingdom is merely 20 or 100 miles on a side, little differences make a big difference. That is actually two problems, the first of which is when the coin was struck.

In that original Celator article, I missed an important clue. I failed to identify the celestial equator and tropics, divided into houses. I saw that only as a "ribbon" wrapping the world as a gift to the emperor, thus, my seeking help from academic astronomers.

A generous gift by Michael C. Ruettgers will enable the MFA to present a gallery devoted to the art of ancient coins - the only such gallery in an art museum in the United States. Richard Grossmann, Consulting Curator for Numismatics, provides an overview of the planning and preparation under way for this state-of-the-art gallery, slated to open in 2012, and discusses some of the benefits (and challenges) associated with exhibiting ancient coins in a museum setting.

There's a recent article in the Dever Post and other papers by Hadeel Al-Shalchi about poor security in Egypt's museums; alarm and camera systems that don't work and the recent theft of a Van Gogh painting. It's sad that nations don't want looting and the export of their ancient coins and antiquities, but they don't want to fund more money to protect what they already have. I wish more nations would adopt England's treasure law. This article in my local paper is titled "Security lax in Egypt's museums." If you want to read the article you can do a Google search. Sorry I don't know how to create a link to it!

Message from CNG regarding possible restrictions on Greek Cultural property

I did not know which forum to place this in, but below is an email I received from CNG. I am sure many of you have already read this, but I thought that I would put here anyway. I think Greece is following Italy and trying to find new ways to tax the rest of the world.

Paul

 :(

From CNG: :We've recently learned that the government of Greece has asked the United States to implement new import restrictions on Greek cultural property. We're asking for your help to oppose any new restrictions on the trade of coins.

Although we don't know exactly which objects are specified in the confidential request, we have reason to believe coins of Greek origin are included. In the past, coins from Greece have not been subject to restrictions of this type. If this new request is granted, the impact on both collectors and dealers could be substantial. We're asking you to help by making your thoughts known to the Cultural Property Advisory Committee (CPAC), which will soon evaluate the Greek request. Please see our instructions below to send CPAC your comments.

Why should you oppose these import restrictions? Industry attorney Peter Tompa has suggested that collectors consider the following points:
US law requires that restrictions only be applied on artifacts "first discovered in Greece." But hoard evidence demonstrates that Greek coins circulated extensively outside the confines of the modern Greek nation state.
US law requires restrictions only be placed on artifacts of "cultural significance." But coins -- which exist in many multiples-- do not meet that particular criteria.
US law requires that less drastic remedies be tried before import restrictions. But Greece has not tried systems akin the the UK Treasure Act before seeking restrictions.
US law requires that restrictions be consistent with the interests of the international community in cultural exchanges. But restrictions will diminish the ability of American collectors to appreciate Greek culture and could greatly limit people to people contacts with other collectors in Europe.
Restrictions are unfair and discriminatory to Americans. Collectors in the EU--including Greece-- have no similar limitations on their ability to import ancient coins.

To find out more about Greece's request, you may visit the Cultural Heritage Center site maintained by the US Department of State. In addition, Peter Tompa maintains a blog in which he discusses his opinions of the Greek request.

Please send your comments to the Cultural Property Advisory Committee through the following US government Web site before September 22:

Hi,

Got home just too late to pick this coin up from the Post Office but wanted to post it here anyway. It was one of a group of two coins recently sold at auction and the vendor looks to have not noted the reverse.

Sol standing on the reverse between two captives and although it would be unusual for and Allectan coin to have two captives it could be over looked. What is different is the legend. You would expect to see ORIENS AVG, however, from the evident lettering it looks to read SOLI INVICTO. As such this would probably be a new reverse type, unrepresented in the BM collection (although I do need to check Oxford and Cambridge collections). It is also unusual in that there are no field marks, only ML in the exergue.

I just saw this news from last week (Friday, August 6) that I found very curious.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/manchest...00/8893100.stm
"An archaeologist says his latest find of buried treasure is proof of a previously unknown Roman encampment on the outskirts of Manchester.
James Balme has been searching the area around Warburton for over a decade to find evidence of its Roman past.
... using his metal detector, James claims to have made his second discovery of buried treasure: eight Roman silver Republican Denarius coins, dated between 252 BC and 2 BC.
...And although it was impossible to establish an exact date of loss, he suggested that they were probably buried between 70 and 130 AD."

I just wonder: knowing that virtually all the republican silver disappeared during Neronian times and whatever was left out there was gone in the times of Tajan in early 100s what made him give such a late estimation - Vespasian times and later, especially extending it to 130?
