I got given my first couple of coins to get started. One of them i was told was a lizimax coin. The man who i got them from didnt speak good english and i wasnt able to establish whether this is roman or greek. The only clue i have is the name Lizimax. Can anyone explain who this is and where i can read up on this coin/person? thanks

Welcome to collecting ancients and to the group! If you can provide an image of your coin, someone here should be able to let you know more about it.

thanks to you both. Firstly yes Lysimachus appears to be the answer. The image of Lysimachus on a coin which i found on wikipedia, although much clearer than the example on my coin, appears to my eyes to match exactly the person on my coin.
The man who gave this to me infact did so in Bourgas (Bulgaria) where Thracian coins are relatively common.
I would like to post an image of this and my other coin (byzantine I believe) but my 8Mp camera doesnt seem capable of capturing a clear enough image.
Any tips fpr photographing coins?

Make sure you have the macro mode on.
Almost all cameras have one, usually it's a button with a flower symbol.
If not, look it up in your camera's manual.
Taking pictures is easy, taking really good pictures very hard.
Even if you don't have a tripod setting a 2-second delay may help
with the shaking of the camera.
