Hello folks,

Here's a neat coin I added to my collection recently:

http://www.beastcoins.com/Errors/ConstantineII-RICVIII-4-Rome-TN.jpg

Constantine II, AE4, September 9, 337-Spring 340, Rome
VIC CONSTA_NTINVS AVG
Laurel and rosette-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right
VIRTVS_AVGVSTI
Emperor, bare-headed and in military dress standing facing, head right, transverse spear in right hand, resting left hand on shield
R leaf P in exergue most probable
16mm x 19mm, 1.46g
RIC VIII, 4 (Common)

This coin is perfectly preserved for condition, showing the obverse legend starting as normal, with second half obliterated by the first strike of the coin at 90 degrees counterclockwise, showing the VIC CONSTA part again. The reverse also shows the 90 degree double-strike, but clockwise.

Since the coin's double-strike on the reverse obliterated the exergue, I'm wondering if:

1 - this type was produced at any mint other than Rome,
2 - any examples have come to light with a different exergual mark than R leaf P,
3 - any have been found from an officina other than 1.

Since I'm on the subject, have there been any other coins with the obverse legend using VIC found? RIC only lists Constantine II, only from Rome and only from 337-340.

Also, RIC lists this coin as common, but I believe this is the first one I have ever found in the 8 years I have been collecting Late Roman bronzes.

Thanks!

Hi Zach,
I don`t particularly watch for coins of this type but the few I have seen have all been from Rome mint. I`m surprised that RIC rated this coin as common, I`ve never encountered very many of them.

Thanks Keith! I'll just keep on the lookout for them and will post a reply on this thread if I can find any that don't fit the only one entry in RIC for this legend.
