I have been looking at an interesting Rom. Prov. that clearly needs cleaning but is too expensive for me to personally try my untrained hand at it safely. It is not the kind of piece you'd wish to learn on. Unfortunately, I was told by a reputable source that cleaning such a coin could cost 1000 dollars---over three times the list price of the coin!!! Arrrrgggghhhh!
Are there no reasonable options?

Should cost in the $50-150 range to have it done correctly. It would probably be a mechanical cleaning in which case your paying someone for several hours of work. The problem will be finding someone to do it correctly. The best cleaners don't clean single coins for people, unless you're good friends with them.

This guy cleaned an Anglo-Saxon coin for me, came out nicely, cost GBP15 or less, can't recall.

Which has nothing to do with the original posters question.

I can't believe he's actually charging $200 for it--that takes some chutzpah.

Thank you for your suggestions on this! Of the two conservers (?) one has been eliminated in my thinking simply due to his silence on simple questions put to him regarding cleaning techniques. Can't afford to be left wondering what slight of hand (or chemical) will be performed on this wonderful little bronze history marker. You all have been helpful!

Can you post a picture of the coin?

I am so dismally low tech--I wish I knew how to import the photos off their current website to this discussion board. I'd love for you to take a look if you'd like. If you'd care to send me a PM I'd be delighted to email you the photo right from the site.
