Dear all,

I don't know if Pink's classification, revised in the RIC, is still accurate but until recently I had not found any unlisted argentei from Antioch. It seems to me this one makes exception to the rule and I would be glad if some of you were aware of other unlisted coins with the same mintmark (* ANTH •). I did not find any mention of it in the Seaby, nor the RIC catalogues.

Description:
AR Argenteus, 5 h., weight : 3.18 g.
Av/ Head right, laur.
MAXIMIA-NVS AVG
Rv/ Three-turreted camp-gate, open; no doors.
VIRTVS - MILITVM
Mintmark: * ANTH •

Rq: the mintmark is similar to RIC 39b but with the dot after the H, and not before.

Thanks, Jay.

Jay,

You might try contacting Freeman & Sear. They handled a massive hoard of Tetrarchic argentei a few years ago and may have knowledge of more examples.

Thanks Zach for this advice. Rob Freeman replied that this mintmark variety was not represented in either of the two large groups of argentei he handled.

I keep searching in the numismatic literature...
