Hello everyone!

I have been collecting for the last 4 years, so I am at least a beginner aspiring to be an intermediate level collector. My first post was a want list when it should simply have been an introduction, so here I am introducing myself to you and eager to learn and get to know and talk to many of you. I have thoroughly enjoyed the posts I have read so far and, as others have commented, I have been put at ease by the whole atmosphere of this forum. In fact, I nearly burst out laughing reading the good-natured ribbing in one thread!
I am a primarily a collector of provincials with an interesting smattering of Achaemenid thrown in for spice. My provincial focus is Greece and Asia Minor, from Claudius I through Domitian. I know only a smattering--just enough to get me in trouble--so I appreciate your patience.
I live in the greater Cleveland area with my wife Stephanie and little five year old, Allison. And, yes, our Browns choked royally again this season, but "there is always next season." That is our mantra in NE Ohio!
Go Buckeyes!!!

Zach, right?

I bought a beautiful little Knidos silver from you a year or so ago. Thanks for the kind hellos. I am looking forward to interacting with you and others, but Lycaonian will do a WHOLE lot more listening than talking, I'm sure.
I am not sure who Mark is, but I am originally from Philly so the mere mention of the C-Boys sends us Cheesesteakers into convulsions. I spent too many years watching the "Birds" get thumped by Staubach, White, and company to easily get over it!
Anyway,I look forward to being part of this.

Hello to you as well and thanks for the welcome! If it comes down to the C-Boys and the Pats, as the prognosticators suggest, I'm afraid you will find me on the New England sidelines, though :D .

Hi Dave,

I'm curious, is your interest in the Achaemenids strictly the Imperial sigloi and darics, or do you dabble in the satraps too?

Brgds,
Darcy
PS Have been a Cowboys fan forever but it's sooooo hard to cheer for TO.

I hear you Darcy---about TO. It was hard to watch him and his antics with the Eagles--yikes!

Primary interest is the emperors--Darius, Artaxerxes...

However, I have been watching a well known satrap's issues some and go on the market.--Mazaios of Tarsos, Cilicia. These pieces are beautiful and dynamic. Someday...perhaps:o

I take it you collect the satraps?

T.O. is a prima dona, but you gotta respect the talent. Seeing him up close and in person a couple weeks ago..............you can see why he breaks tackles. All my friends who are Eagle fans, hate him, but I have have a newfound fondness of him.

I have been a Dallas fan since 1969 and the Pats are my fall back team. But when (not if) they meet in the Super Bowl, I will be going for the "Boys.

As far as Mazaios...I picked this up last year at Gemini. Neat little coin. Didn't go with the intention of bidding for it, but they had a half dozen nice examples and I got caught up in the bidding.

Mark,

Nicely centered stater--crisp legends--and the all too hard to find sharp obverse. Truly nifty piece. Nice, nice catch. That took a few worms to land, no doubt! I'm still looking for one, so any suggestions are welcome.

Well, I waited till a group came up on auction and then I went for the one I thought was second best. I guess it was a matter of opinion since several of the others also went for more, but I got it for about $725.

Lately, they are all going for $1k or more like this and I don't know why.

You might have to wait till another batch shows up.

I did the same thing with my Athens Owl. Waited till a large group came up for sale and grabbed one while the prices were fairly low.

Of course, with a strategy like that, the collecting slows down.

Two years and I only have 8 coins.

When I haven't followed that strategy, I have paid dearly.

Yep...that price for a piece that nice was a good buy---esp. if it were judged by vcoins prices. I have seen ones like this on vcoins pushing $1500! Mark, are you saying you have collected 8 coins over 2 years in a specialized area or does this represent your collection to date?

Collection to date. I should add that I blew some coin money on a couple maps and a samurai helmet this year.

My focus became eclectic once I realized there were too many coins with either great artistry or intriguing historic significance.

I.E. I collect what attracts me.

Let's see what I end up with after next week (maybe even my first Roman coin).

Hi Dave,

I collect both Achaemenids and their satraps, I made the mistake of buying the coin in my profile pic(a Datames from Cilicia) and it was all over but the debt.:)

TO certainly has a whack of talent Mark, but I can't forgive the taunting on the star. I wish someone had turned him into a lawn dart right there (I think it was George Teague who tried but failed, where's Randy White when you need him).

Cheers,

Good to hear back from you Darcy!

I saw a carradice I on ebay aF condition and sort of wish I had bid on it. The condition was not stellar but then again neither was the final price and indebtedness incurred by its purchaser:rolleyes: I think it went for under $200 and this was a month or so ago. So I wouldn't mind locating a nice carradice I --any hints at good places to "fish" for Ach. sigloi ingeneral and carradice I specifically? I purchased a nice carradice IV from an ebayer named Thymius about a month or so ago. He must have stumbled into a hoard sale because he kept trickling sigloi onto the ebay market week after week. I bought a respectable carradice IV daric for a very good price over the summer but they have shot up since gold has syrocketted into the stratosphere. Also added a carradice II fractional in aF.
OOOps...we digress from Roman provincials. Will my computer self-destruct, having crossed this forum's frontier into Persian no man's land?
Darcy...I'd love to have your input into the above carradice I questions and would value them.
Hello too goes to AlexB. Thanks for your greeting and welcome the other day.

Hi Dave,

I have no real ideas on finding Carradice I examples, except watch the auctions, both US and European. Sixbid.com is a good website for keeping track of major auction houses upcoming events. Have you tried sending a want list to a dealer/dealers you've dealt with already? You may find a bargain on Ebay, I haven't really paid attention to it in the past few years so am not sure of the current state of prices there. Here's a pic of my Carradice I (it didn't cost 200, but wasn't actually extremely expensive either).

Darcy,

Don't know if you saw them, but I recently had two neat Achaemenids (first two I've ever had I think).

http://www.vcoins.com/ancient/beastcoins/store/catalog/Z6047.jpg

Time of Artaxerxes II to Artaxerxes III, AR Siglos, c.375-340 BC, Achaemenid Kingdom
(No legend)
Persian king or hero in kneeling-running stance right, dagger in right hand and bow in left
(No legend)
Incuse punch
13mm x 16mm, 5.41g
Carradice IV/C, pl. XIV, 46

http://www.vcoins.com/ancient/beastcoins/store/catalog/Z6046.jpg

Time of Xerxes II to Artaxerxes II, AR Siglos, c.420-375 BC, Achaemenid Kingdom
(No legend)
Persian king or hero in kneeling-running stance right, dagger in right hand and bow in left, quiver with arrows over shoulder
(No legend)
Incuse punch
14mm x 17mm, 5.43g
Carradice IV/B, pl. XIV, 43-45

I bought them for their neat and very different styles.

Yes, Zach, I did see the sigloi. Second photo struck me as a rather interesting albeit "crude" style issue. Ultimately I suppose we can't get at the reasons why this "Picasso" (my take) rendering of the Great King differs so radically from the earlier issues, but I guess I am still curious. Were these offered on your vcoins site or ebay, I can't remember. The abstractness is not a matter of wear pattern/ minting issues, is it?
I love the Persian sigloi and daric issues for a number of reasons. One is the lure of their simple, quaint (oops-betraying a bit of cultural chauvinism, I suppose) beauty.

I must say, folks, that I have my questions about how those C-Boys will fare against the Packers ;) (their next target, right?). They looked pretty lacklustre in their last showing, and brilliant coaching notions on conserving the health of starters aside:confused: , I have always had my doubts about how wise sitting your starters for a substantial amount of time really is.

You 're not gonna like this emmy:) , but HJB sold a beauty with a "banker's mark" similar style I think to Zach's back on Dec. 14 on Ebay. went for about $240 and had wonderful facial detail, good centering with crenulated (sp?) crown visible in nearly full detail  I still have the image saved in my ebay watch list if you care to have a good cry:D . If you mean he is not given to expressing himself with socially acceptable vagueness, I am good with that:D I think Alex would have fit well in my family in my growing up years. We certainly never went to bed wondering about the subtleties and intricate innuendos of one another's communication that day.

Might as well shoot straight and get the bleeding over with.

Im definately not vague, well at least I dont think so...

However, where was I? Oh yes, Trition XI. I had a good bid in on the Offa but trumped by USD1000. I think there are quite a few 'professional' investors buying portfolios of coins. Is really time to sit back and watch. I have bought a couple fixed price coins recently, both ordinary-types, anything 'special' is rocketing up in price.

The UK auctions are better for pricing - many coins seem to end up at US auctions afterwards at x2 price so better to buy in UK for the moment. That is for Anglo-S anyway.

Is this is right thread? :)

Alex,

Yep, Roman Provincials---don't let the recent detour through the topics of Persia and Triton woes confuse you:) . I do have a coin that brings us back to the theme of RP's if anyone cares to retrace our tracks. To me a little enigmatic. Bought a Lystra piece from a vcoins dealer purportedly from Lystra of Lycaonia--a large bronze from the reign of A. Pius. The ethnic is off the planchet but the obverse clearly retains the inscription "Cereris."
What's more, another dealer confirmed with his microscope that this piece circulated earleir as another issue and that there are shadowy remnants of another scraped inscription underneath. I am told by authorities that "cereris" ihas only been found on Lystra pieces to date. It is a nifty novelty piece!

I shall take your points 1-5:

1. Live in the wonderfully named 'Happy Valley', a Mecca for horse-racing hence the name given by a wonderfully optimistic people;
2. The only money I get to hold are the old coins I struggle to photo/scan despite numerous attempts, you only see the partially successful result, not the casualties;
3. I am the boards;
4. I am also Royalty;
5. I would like to drive a bus but have yet to see a blue-rinse here. The humidity would see it (and them) off methinks...
