Following the post on Antioch vs Paphos, I've always wondered why there has been regularly from Augustus to Hadrian (at least) coinages with latin language, designed to circulate in a Greek-speaking world, like the regular provincial coinage: the Ephesus issues that Zach mentioned, the 'Commagene' issues (actually rather struck at Rome for circulation in Syria: see http://www.ancients.info/forums/showthread.php?t=529) under Vespasian, the quite extensive 'Antioch' issues under Trajan and Hadrian (in parallel with the regular Antioch coinage!?), Corinth issue, all Cistophoroi ...

Was it to be used by the army soldiers garrisoned in the East (like maybe the 1st cent. Perinthus Julio-Claudian coinage in the Balkans)? or another specific use? What do you think?
